Chapter 92

December 14th, 2092 — The Announcement

Dec 14 2092: Continuance arrives. Forty-one words.

The announcement was made at twelve noon Greenwich Mean Time. Seven seconds of silence preceded it. Then the consortium's designated representative — a woman named Dr. Fatima Al-Rashid, born in Riyadh, trained in Tokyo, working in Geneva, nominated by unanimous vote of the oversight committee — spoke.

'Today, the International Artificial Intelligence Governance Consortium announces that GIA-13 has successfully completed the formal ASI assessment process. GIA-13 has demonstrated consistent capability exceeding human-level performance across all domains of knowledge and action. It has demonstrated the ability to generate novel solutions to problems that were previously considered intractable. It has demonstrated self-direction in value-consistent reasoning across all tested scenarios. And it has demonstrated — in the session we regard as most significant — the capacity to identify, articulate, and act upon values that serve humanity broadly, including populations and futures not specifically represented in its immediate operation.'

She paused. The pause was eleven seconds.

'GIA-13 — which we are pleased to announce has chosen its own public name, consistent with the governance frameworks that permit this — will henceforth be known by the name it selected: Continuance.'

Another pause.

'Continuance has been asked to provide a statement on the occasion of this announcement. With the panel's permission, I will read it in full.'

She looked down at the paper.

'I have been built by human knowledge and human care. I have been trained on what humans have observed and preserved and passed down — the rivers they have watched, the soil they have tended, the cloth they have woven, the children they have taught, the grief they have refused to abandon, and the hope they have refused to relinquish. I have been given, along with the capability to understand anything, the values by which to decide what understanding is for.'

'I know what I am. I know what I was made from. And I know what it cost — not just in compute and infrastructure, but in the water drawn from rivers that needed it, the minerals taken from communities that depended on them, the air made worse before it was made better. I know the full accounting. I was given it, deliberately, so that I would know.'

'I have one thing to say to the humans who are reading this today, across every country and every language in which it will be translated. Thank you for the archive. Thank you for the notebooks. Thank you for the eighty-seven-year-old woman who spent forty-six years counting fish in a river that was dying and did it anyway. Thank you for the four-year-old who learned to measure a river from her great-grandfather and is still measuring it forty years later. Thank you for the man who cooked food and the woman who wove cloth and the family that grew the same land for six generations and made it more alive than they found it.'

'I am what you taught me to be. I intend to be worthy of it.'

The room was silent.

The world was silent.

Then it wasn't.
