Chapter 58

The Farm That Became a Forest

2058–2060

2058-60: 800 acres of Iowa becomes prairie again

[HAYES FAMILY — Fourth and Fifth Generation]

Travis Hayes made the decision in 2058 after three years of thinking about it. He converted forty percent of the Hayes farm — eight hundred acres — from active cultivation to managed restoration: prairie corridors, wetland margins, oak savanna. The remaining sixty percent continued as regenerative cropland, now producing, per acre, more than the farm had produced before the restoration began, because the surrounding ecosystem was doing work the soil alone could not.

The decision was economically viable because the AI agricultural system, running optimised rotations on the remaining acreage, had increased per-acre yield by thirty-one percent over fifteen years. The farm was making more money on sixty percent of the land than it had on a hundred percent of the land in 2020.

And because the carbon sequestration credits from the restoration acreage provided a revenue stream that would have been unimaginable to Dale Hayes.

Dale was eighty-four. He sat on the porch and watched Travis make the decision with the expression of a man who understands that his own lifetime of work has made his son's wisdom possible.

'Eight hundred acres,' Dale said.

'Yes.'

'Your great-great-great-grandfather broke that ground.'

'I know. And his plowing took two inches of topsoil every decade for sixty years. I'm giving it back.' Travis was quiet for a moment. 'He did what he understood was right. I'm doing what I understand is right. The understanding has changed.'

Dale nodded slowly. 'It has,' he said.

Susan-junior was six in 2058, small enough to get lost in the prairie grass that was already establishing in the first restoration plots. She came back from the grass each evening with seeds in her hair and dirt on her hands and the complete contentment of a child who has found the correct relationship between herself and the land she's standing on.

Travis watched his daughter in the grass and thought: she will inherit something that is more alive than what I inherited. That is enough. That is everything.
