Ramanavami 2008

The Occasion

Ramanavami is celebrated in remembrance of Lord Rama on the day of his birthday. It falls on Navami — the ninth day counted from the Full Moon day in the Tamil month of Chiththirai (April-May). It is a day of devotion, reflection, and simplicity.

The Food

As with most festivals in our tradition, Ramanavami is accompanied by its own set of special foods — humble, cooling, and purposeful for the summer season:

• Neermore — thin liquid yoghurt, diluted and spiced, cooling on a warm day
• Paruppu — fresh lentils soaked overnight and served simply, a nod to austerity and nourishment
• Paanagam — a lightly spiced drink made with jaggery and water, sweetly refreshing and traditional to this festival

These three together are considered the offering of Ramanavami — simple ingredients prepared with care.
